If you currently have a PacificSource health insurance plan in Montana, you’ve probablyheard the news — and you may be wondering what it means for you and your family.
The short answer: your coverage is still active right now, but it will end at the close of 2026, and you’ll need to take action before then to avoid a gap in coverage.
In May 2026, PacificSource Health Plans confirmed that it is exiting the individual insurance market across all states where it operates. In Montana, this affects approximately 42,000 members who enrolled in PacificSource plans through the ACA Marketplace or directly.
PacificSource cited ongoing financial losses in the individual market as the primary reason for the exit. This is not a sudden closure — the company is committed to honoring all current plan obligations through December 31, 2026.
Your PacificSource plan will remain fully active through December 31, 2026. During this time:
However, you must select a new plan before December 31, 2026 to ensure you have continuous coverage starting January 1, 2027. If you do nothing, you will have no coverage on January 1st.
Montana’s ACA Marketplace will continue to offer plans for 2027. The two primary carriers expected to offer individual and family plans in Montana are:
Plan availability, premiums, and networks for 2027 will be finalized in the fall of 2026. It’s important not to assume your doctors will be in-network with a new carrier — this should be verified before you enroll.
Open enrollment for 2027 coverage runs from November 1 through December 15, 2026. This is the window during which you can compare and select a new plan.
Do not rely on automatic Marketplace re-enrollment. While the Marketplace may attempt to match you to a plan, auto-enrollment does not guarantee you’ll be placed in the best or most cost-effective option for your situation. You should actively compare plans during open enrollment.
If your income and household circumstances remain similar to prior years, you should still qualify for premium subsidies (Advance Premium Tax Credits) through the ACA Marketplace. Current rules cover households earning between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level, and enhanced subsidies under current law extend eligibility further up the income scale.
Your subsidy amount will be recalculated based on 2027 plan premiums and your projected income. Working with a broker can help you make sure you’re applying the right subsidy and not leaving money on the table.
An independent insurance broker is exactly the kind of resource this situation is built for. Unlike going directly to an insurance company, a broker works for you — not for the insurer — and can shop across multiple carriers to find the plan that best fits your specific situation.
